Dachigam National Park: The Jewel of Kashmir's Wilderness

Overview

Dachigam National Park, located in Jammu and Kashmir, India, is a stunning wildlife sanctuary known for its breathtaking landscapes and diverse flora and fauna. Established in 1981, it spans an area of 141 square kilometers and serves as the last home of the endangered Hangul deer (Kashmir stag). The name "Dachigam" means "Ten Villages", commemorating the ten villages that were relocated to create the park.

Geography

Dachigam is located 22 km from Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The park’s altitude ranges from 1,700 meters to 4,300 meters, covering both gentle slopes and rugged mountainous terrain. It is divided into two sections:

·       Lower Dachigam – More accessible, with grasslands, streams, and dense forests.

·       Upper Dachigam – Remote and difficult to access, consisting of alpine meadows, rocky cliffs, and glacial valleys.

The Daghwan River, a major source of Srinagar’s drinking water, flows through the park, adding to its scenic beauty.

Climate

Dachigam experiences temperate to alpine climate, with distinct seasons:

·       Summer (May–August): Pleasant weather (10°C to 25°C), ideal for sightseeing and trekking.

·       Autumn (September–November): Stunning golden and red foliage, with temperatures between 5°C and 15°C.

·       Winter (December–March): Harsh and snowy (-10°C to 5°C), making Upper Dachigam inaccessible.

·       Spring (April–May): Blooming flowers and mild temperatures (5°C to 20°C).

Accessibility

·       By Air: The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam Airport, Srinagar (about 22 km away).

·       By Road: Well-connected by road from Srinagar via cabs, private vehicles, and local transport.
